Gangster directed by one of the most gifted young directors, Aashiq Abu of Malayalam, which has one of the legendary actor, Mammootty in the lead, always gets much hype. Same was the case with Gangster too.

The pre-release hype, and the expectation levels were rocket high. However, in the big screen film failed to live up to the expectations. In spite of having stylish cinematography, slow motion sequence Gangster failed to cause any impact on the audience just because it failed to present a solid narrative.

Akbar Ali Khan (Mammootty),  the son of  Iliays Ali Khan, who is the gangster of Mumbai. His father got killed by Underworld gangs. At sixteen year old Akbar starts his revenge by killing the one who killed his father. Later he moves to Mangalapuram, there he joins the hands with his uncle and the dons of Managlapuram, uncle Sam (John Paul), and Mani Menon (Kunchan).

There comes Anto (Shekhar Menon), who is a drug addict and a womanizer, sells the expired drugs here to make great earnings. From there on film travels in the familiar routes.

The film has nothing new in the story line, thus it required an extra refreshing narration to keep the audience glued to their seats. Unfortunately Gangster is no Second Show or Neram  where the refreshing narration came to the rescue.

On the positive side Gangster has stylishly set, some great location, fantastic DOP, moreover a great BGM from Deepek Dev all those still did not able to overcome the lack of a believable story line with a mediocre script.

On the performance side Mammootty looked stylish, Shekhar Menon looked different as the baddie, Kunchan , John and Hareesh done their part convincingly. The leading ladies Nyla Usha and Aparna Gopinath had nothing much to do in the film.

Still, we just can’t underestimate Aashiq the director and Mammootty the actor with just one film, because Aashiq is the director who crafted films like 22 Female Kottayam, Salt N’ Pepper, so we just can’t tell that he is not capable of making brilliant films.

There is no need of any words for three time national award winning actor, Mammookka. Moreover, both had created a box office hit with Daddy Cool earlier. Hence we can expect much better films together in the coming years.

At the end Gangster is an experiment gone wrong. So this GANGSTER failed to RISE.
